The 1st International Congress on Mining Restoration (CIREM), to be held from 24 to 26 November 2026 at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), is moving forward with its organisation and is entering a decisive stage in shaping its technical programme and consolidating support from the sector. Driven by the Mine and Quarry Restoration Network (RMC), CIREM continues to build participation and institutional and business backing, with three key milestones currently underway: the call for papers, the opening of registrations with a reduced fee, and the official sponsorship programme.
Following the launch of the official Congress website, which centralises key information about the event, the Congress Organising Committee is working to secure support in order to advance the development of an attractive programme aligned with the needs of the sector, reflecting the technical, regulatory, and social challenges that shape mining restoration performance in the 21st century.
CIREM pursues a clear mission: to build, together, a mining restoration that is more effective, innovative, and aligned with nature, strengthening collaboration among stakeholders and raising the sector’s technical standard.
Call for papers until 26 March
The Scientific Committee is keeping the period for receiving communications open until 26 March 2026.
Professionals, researchers, universities, companies, and public administrations are invited to submit technical papers, studies, projects, case studies, and applied experiences that contribute to raising the standard of mining restoration.
Proposals may be framed within six major thematic areas:
- Mine closures, governance and valorisation of post-mining areas
- Ecological restoration in mining
- Geomorphological design, ground stability and hydrology
- Water and soil management and geochemical remediation
- Revegetation, passive restoration and best practices in Natura 2000
- Innovation, technology and digitalisation
The papers, projects, studies, case studies, and experiences related to mining restoration that are to be shared will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee and will make up the bulk of the Congress programme, which, in general, will be presented in oral format.
“We want a programme built by and for the sector: with evidence, with lessons learned, and with solutions that can be scaled. This ‘Call for Speakers’ is an invitation to share what works and to raise the technical standard of mining restoration,” says Javier de la Villa, President of RMC.

Early registration open with reduced fees
CIREM has also opened the early registration period, allowing attendees to benefit from reduced fees. This option offers advantageous economic conditions for professionals, companies, researchers, and students who formalise their participation in advance, facilitating planning and guaranteeing their presence at the leading international meeting on mining restoration, which will be held in Spain for the first time.

In parallel, although it already has numerous entities and companies that have added their support to the organisation of the Congress, CIREM is keeping its official sponsorship programme open.
