The restoration of degraded soils <\/strong>in mining is increasingly incorporating the use of organic amendments,<\/strong> a solution that makes it possible to restore the functionality of land affected by extractive activities. According to Vicen\u00e7 Carabassa, <\/strong>a researcher at CREAF, these materials are particularly important in cases where the soil has disappeared and needs to be created from scratch.<\/strong><\/p> \n\n\n\n

Carabassa will take part next 20 May in a webinar organised by the Mining and Quarry Restoration Network (RMC)<\/a> <\/strong>in collaboration with CREAF and the Ag\u00e8ncia de Residus de Catalunya,<\/strong> together with Meri Pous<\/strong>, Head of the Soil Protection Department at the Agency. During the session, which will begin at 10:00 a.m.<\/strong>, the Spanish edition of the \u2018Manual de aplicaci\u00f3n de enmiendas org\u00e1nicas en rehabilitaci\u00f3n de suelos\u2019, <\/strong>a practical guide aimed at professionals in the sector, will be presented. The session forms part of activities linked to International Compost Awareness Week.<\/strong><\/p> \n\n\n\n

Organic amendments consist of the incorporation of organic matter<\/strong> \u2014such as compost, manure or sludge\u2014 into so-called technosols<\/strong>, explains Vicen\u00e7 Carabassa. \u201cWe often start from a situation where there is no soil, and these amendments act as a trigger for the biological processes that allow soil to form,\u201d he explains.<\/p> \n\n

In this field, Carabassa points out that over time, different types of materials have been used, from sewage sludge to compost of urban, agricultural or livestock origin, as well as digestate and bio-stabilised materials. Many of these come from waste that, following appropriate treatment, can be successfully recovered <\/strong>for use in soil restoration. \u201cThis approach makes it possible to recover the organic matter and nutrients contained in organic waste, avoiding disposal in landfill and contributing to a circular economy model,\u201d he stresses.<\/p> \n\n\n\n

This work is supported by decades of research. As he explains, since the 1980s, mining restoration projects have generated experiences that now make it possible to analyse long-term results. \u201cWe have plots that have been monitored for more than 30 years, which is quite unusual and allows us to assess how these soils evolve,\u201d he explains. Among the main findings, he notes that the use of amendments can accelerate vegetation recovery and improve carbon sequestration.<\/strong><\/p> \n\n\n\n

However, he stresses that their application must be adapted to each case<\/strong>. The choice of amendment type, dosage and application method depends on factors such as the characteristics of the site or the restoration objectives. <\/strong>In this regard, he explains that some amendments promote rapid vegetation cover, helping to reduce erosion, while others, which are more stabilised, are better suited to facilitating the development of woody vegetation.<\/p> \n\n\n\n

The manual to be presented during the webinar brings this knowledge together and translates it into a practical tool. According to Carabassa, it is aimed at professionals who design or implement restoration projects and covers everything from the characterisation of substrates to the criteria for determining whether amendments are needed, which type to use and how to apply them in each context.<\/strong> Its publication in English is planned for 2027.<\/p> ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
